CABLE BAY receives British EBF Stallion Special Merit Award
Wed 1 Jun 2022

Nominees for seven of the award categories at the annual TBA Flat Breeders’ Awards were announced on Wednesday recognising the significant success of individuals and teams across the industry.
The event, sponsored by The Jockey Club, The National Stud and drinks reception partner Newsells Park Stud, will take place on Wednesday, 6 July at Chippenham Park near Newmarket and feature the presentation of fourteen awards including the previously announced statistical awards for British-based stallions and breeder.
British EBF Stallion Special Merit Award: Cable Bay
The British EBF Stallion Special Merit Award seeks to recognise British based stallions that have rewarded breeders without necessarily standing at high fees or covering blue blooded books of mares. MAYSON (Cheveley Park Stud) was the last winner, reflecting a milestone season in 2020 topped by producing his first Gr.1 winner OXTED.
CABLE BAY (Highclere Stud), a previous year’s nominee, caught the eye of the Bloodstock industry panel with his combination of reliability and ability to produce top class horses, while standing at fees well below £10,000 for almost his entire career. With a lifetime winners/ runners strike rate of 50%, CABLE BAY provides winners at all levels with magnificent reliability. Meanwhile, he has produced top class horses such as Gr.2 winners LIBERTY BEACH and KING’S LYNN and Gr.1 placed DRAGON SYMBOL.
Panelist Marting Stevens commented: “Cable Bay operates at a good strike-rate and is able able to get headliners like Dragon Symbol, King’s Lynn and Liberty Beach. Importantly, he has rewarded a wide range of small British breeders.”
TBA Trustee Anita Wigan said: “We are looking forward to welcoming guests once again to the beautiful Chippenham Park for what will be an enjoyable evening celebrating with our members and the wider industry. The categories look very competitive this year which is testament to the quality of British bloodstock and the breeders who invest so much time, effort and money into our industry.
“I would like to thank all of the event’s supporters, including headline sponsors The Jockey Club and The National Stud, as well as Newsells Park Stud for their kind sponsorship of the welcome reception. We are also grateful to welcome both new and returning partners including Barton Stud, British EBF, Goffs UK, New England Stud and Tattersalls.”
