The British European Breeders’ Fund has collaborated with Newmarket Racecourses to devise a new race on Dubai Future Champions Day with the British EBF sponsoring a seven furlong fillies’ nursery worth £60,000 on the star-studded card on Friday 17th October.
With sponsorship of £40,000 from the EBF added to the total race value, this new race will be the most valuable contest supported by the British EBF and will give a lucrative end-of-season handicap target for juvenile fillies by EBF stallions.
Philip Freedman, chairman of the British EBF, commented: “We are delighted that the income from the stallion studs which funds the EBF has now risen to a level where we can sponsor this race on such an important day for British racing and for two-year-olds.”
The British EBF is a long-standing supporter of fillies’ races, and sponsors 26 Listed races for fillies and mares at racecourses around the country in 2014. The EBF also supports a broad programme of fillies’ handicaps and conditions stakes, as well as the valuable ‘Carrie Red’ nursery at Doncaster in September and the ‘Jersey Lily’ nursery at Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting.
Michael Prosser, head of racing at Newmarket Racecourses, commented: “We are very grateful to the generous sponsorship of the EBF that has aided the staging of this fillies’ nursery which is the most valuable race of its type in Britain.
“It will link in well from a planning point of view for trainers with the existing Jersey Lily, another EBF fillies’ nursery on the Saturday of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, and is a fantastic addition to the Dubai Future Champions Day card, which boasts prize money of £1.075 million this year.”
Over 560 races in the 2014 Flat racing calendar are supported by the British EBF, taking place at every racecourse in Britain. With a total prize money contribution of £1.125m to Flat racing this year the British EBF is one of the largest numerical sponsors in Flat racing.
